Our language use construes our identities
Research
Plurilingualism, Identity, Sociolinguistics
Date
2018-2019
Location
Lancaster University, UK
Funded by the Erasmus program, I conducted research on plurilingualism: the ability to use more than one language and switch easily during communication. I examined plurilingualism’s effect on societal roles and imagined communities (a place where students express their plurilingual selves without fear of judgement from the outside world). Virtual interviews were conducted with pupils at a German high school. Findings showed students have multi-faceted identities in varying contexts such as family, school, and real or imagined communities
