Here, I explored how language processing and working memory interact based on evolutionary theory and prior research on chimpanzees (Inoue & Matsuzawa, 2007, 2009). I used a dual-task paradigm where subjects performed two tasks simultaneously. The primary task involved the recall of the position of digits (1-9) or 9 abstract symbols on a screen after being hidden by squares. The secondary task involved memorizing an 8-digit sequence to be repeated during each trial and recalled at the end. The digits and symbols were shown either sequentially or simultaneously. Results
revealed a negative influence of language on recall when information was presented simultaneously but not when it was presented sequentially. This suggests that visuospatial working memory was hindered by our complex linguistic system in tasks that required
processing of substantial visual information.
